Presenting skills traininG

E. Presenting

communicating effectively with a live audience and to camera require different skills, but many of the fundamental principles of good communication apply to both.

I work with individuals and groups to develop those skills — helping people communicate with greater confidence, clarity and impact.

My 'Talk to Me' presentation training is based on coalface experience. The techniques I teach come from actually doing the job.

Talk To Me

Presenting effectively to a live audience and presenting effectively to camera require different skills, but many of the fundamental principles of good communication apply to both.

'Talk to Me' is practical presentation training for people who need to communicate with confidence, clarity and impact — whether that’s in a meeting, on a stage, at an event or in front of a camera.

The techniques I teach come from coalface experience — from presenting myself, directing presenters and contributors, and helping people communicate effectively as part of my iDEC® training.

My understanding of presentation began during 15 years working in theatre and has developed through a career spanning broadcasting and business communication.

I have written, produced, directed and presented for the BBC, ITV, Discovery and ESPN, and worked with organisations including Adidas, Barclays, BMW, Jaguar Land Rover, Microsoft and the University of Warwick. That breadth of experience allows me to help people find a way of presenting that feels natural, credible and effective — rather than simply teaching theory.

'Talk to Me' can be booked as a presentation training session for organisations, teams and groups, with individual coaching also available.

If you have people who need to become better, more confident presenters, 'Talk to me'.

Speaker & Keynote Presentations

I combine a career in theatre, television and live performance with keynote speaking that is entertaining, thought-provoking and practical.

My talks explore how great communicators connect, why storytelling maters and how thinking differently can become a powerful advantage - blending humour, real world experience and ideas audiences can immediately use.

“John is a highly engaging and fascinating storyteller with decades of experience, which he uses to enliven his speaking engagements, workshops and training sessions.”

David Taylor, Head of Operations at Portobello Business Centre

What Great Storytellers Know About Communication

What do William Shakespeare, Billy Connolly and Barack Obama have in common?

They understand that people remember stories far more than information.

In this talk, I explore what leaders and presenters can learn from actors, comedians and great communicators:

  • How to create real audience connection,

  • The power of pauses, rhythm and silence,

  • Why storytelling still shapes human behaviour,

  • Why authenticity matters more than perfection.

Drawing on my experience in theatre and television, I combine humour, performance techniques and practical takeaways that audiences can immediately use in presentations, pitches and meetings.

Because whether you’re on a stage, in a boardroom or on a Zoom call — how you communicate shapes how people respond.

Dyslexia, Difference and the Power of Thinking Differently

l left school without qualifications as an undiagnosed dyslexic.  To be frank I was virtually illiterate.

Yet my first professional job was Writer in Residence at the Midlands Arts Centre in Birmingham.  How the hell did that happen?  Well in my case literally...You couldn’t write it.

In this personal, funny and thought-provoking talk, I share my experiences from theatre, television and business while challenging traditional ideas about intelligence and ability.

I don’t see dyslexia as a weakness. I see it as a different way of thinking — and one that society needs far more than it often realises.

For most of human history, communities survived because people thought differently. We needed storytellers, problem-solvers, strategists and creators. Yet modern systems often try to force everyone into the same mould.

This talk explores:

  • Creativity and resilience,

  • Thinking differently under pressure,

  • The strengths often linked to dyslexia,

  • Why embracing difference leads to better communication, innovation and leadership.

It’s a talk about confidence, communication and the value of seeing the world differently.

FROM CAVE WALLS TO SMARTPHONES

Storytelling, Technology and Human Connection

Storytelling has always depended on technology.

Long before cinema, television and smartphones, our ancestors were painting on cave walls and using firelight to bring stories to life.

The tools have changed — but the human need to connect has not.

In this talk, I explore the relationship between storytelling and technology through history:  from Greek theatre to radio, cinema, television and today’s digital world.

Drawing on my experience writing for ESPN and ITV, I look at why the most effective communicators embrace technology rather than fear it — and why great storytelling still sits at the heart of modern communication.

It’s a talk about innovation, communication and the timeless human need to tell stories.
